 Devil's Playground from Crags

  • Begin: 9:20 am
  • Return to Car: 3:35 pm
  • Hike Time: 5 hrs, 9 Mins.
  • Total Time: 6 hrs, 15 mins.
  • Distance: 8.66 miles round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 2,951'
  • Calories Burned: 2,500
  • Average Pace: 1.69 mph

My stats above are from MapMyHike. I hiked solo on Monday, August 31, and only encountered five other people on the trail - two women together heading to the Crags, two other solo women on their way toward Devil's Playground or beyond to Pikes, and one solo on his way down. Of course, there were many masked people at the Devil's Playground. I took the left fork of this trail a couple of weeks earlier on a hike to the Crags. This time I took the right fork and went to Devil's Playground.

The trailhead sign. There is a well-maintained restroom at the trailhead.

The fork at about 2/3 mile from the trailhead. The Devil's Playground Trail also takes you to Pike's Peak.

You know you're on the "Dev Ply" trail.

Another sign very early in the hike. Devil's Playground and Crags Campground (trailhead).

An easy crossing over the rocks at 1.66 miles

A pleasant portion of the hike. Much of it was very rocky and steep.

Exiting the trees, looking ahead to the very scenic hike above timberline.

Getting close to Devil's Playground,

If you see this sign, you are across Pikes Peak Road and past the summit of Devil's Playground.

After snapping this picture I turned around and noticed I passed my destination. I crossed back over the road to make my hike to the top of Devil's Playground. This sign should probably be on the other side of the road.

This is the view of the Devil's Playground unranked 13,070' from the parking lot, a mere hill, unless you walked up from Crags.

The last few feet

Looking down from the summit of Devil's Playground at the Pikes Peak Road. There are several porta-potties in the parking lot.

A view from Devil's Playground of the trail back to Crags.

This isn't a typical summit marker, about the size of a nickel, on one of the highest rocks on Devil's Playground. It had some letters on it but I couldn't guess what they meant.

Me standing in front of the rock with the marker.

Picturesque view through some of the beautiful formations on Devil's Playground.

I hiked through high winds and sleet on the way down to timberline. I sure wasn't expecting that. I found out that it snowed on Pike's Peak later that evening.

wondering why you did not hike up to Pikes Peak Summit instead of the Devil's.

Miles

14+ miles would be more than I could handle. I considered Pikes and a shuttle back to Devil's but it would still be 12. Then drive back home. Nope. Thanks for asking.

Maybe I need to build up to more miles.
