 The Lost 14er?

Marshall Pass TH, 10800', 6:50am
Chipeta Mountain, 12850', 8:50am
Pt 13472, 9:35am
Mount Ouray, 13971', 1:00pm
Return to TH, 3:10pm

approx. 11miles/5300'/8hr 20min

The crux of the route was a downed tree 1.5 miles from Marshall Pass. I was doubtful, but after 15 minutes of pulling, pushing and removing branches, Derek and I secured passage for his vehicle.

The hike is straightforward class 2, and despite some lingering snow, axes and snowshoes are not needed.

As we ascended north from the pass, prominent Mt Antora came into view to the south.

Mount Antora, southern-most Sawatch 13er

Derek suggested we hit Chipeta and 13472 first, so we skirted Pt 12685 to the west and then began the long march north.

From 13472 we had a good view of Shavano to the north.

We also could see the main goal for the day.

Mount Ouray, from 13472

We reversed direction, passing back over Chipeta, and ascended Ouray's west ridge. A lot of quartz can be seen along the way. The main question would soon be answered - is Ouray an undiscovered 14er?

Not today, not according to this GPS!

Satisfied that we had climbed two 13ers and no 14ers, we returned west down the ridge and then headed south to the car in the warming day.

Marshall Pass? Can it be driven in a 2wd?

Layne Bracy

The road is dry.

We drove a 2WD today and had no problem. There are some small ruts and rocks, but go slow and you‘ll do fine!

Thanks, and congrats on a not-quite 14er!
