 Snowmass-West Ridge Peak #10 Report #1

Click here for my first ever trip report on Snowmass Mountain's West Ridge:

If you're just looking for road conditions, the road up to Lead King Basin from Marble is completely open but is 4 Wheel Drive ONLY. The more off-road capable your vehicles is and the more experience you or your driver has the better. We bottomed out several times in a newer GMC pickup. The road from Crystal to the trailhead is even worse; the bridge is out and the river was bumper-high at 7am this morning, meaning it is probably not possible to cross after noon for most vehicles.

The brief trail report is that the snow is completely avoidable and you can leave your ice axes and crampons at home, but the climb after Little Gem Lake is as loose as ever. I recommend a climbing helmet because you never know who might be above you.

With that being said, Snowmass is an awesome hike and Geneva Lake/Lead King Basin is ridiculously beautiful right now. Here is one of the pictures on my trip report. I hope you enjoy!

River crossing

We did manage to cross the river in Tacomas around 3 or 4 pm a week earlier, although run-off probably varies day to day. Regardless, even though the Crystal road is shorter in distance, the time it takes to drive is about the same either direction because of the difference in road conditions (we drove in from marble and out past Crystal). The ‘hanging mill‘ on the crystal road is pretty cool though.
