 Longs First ascent

Longs is Awesome!
My friend and I started on the trail about 3:30am with a bright full moon and enough fellow hikers to light up most of RMNP.

We were fortunate to pick the perfect day, weather was clear blue skies all day, a bit cool some minor ice from the narrows on up, for the most part it was sparse and not a problem but there were a few spots if you weren't watching closely it could be surprise.

There was a strong breeze going through the keyhole on the way back we took a break on a ledge near the hut commemorating Agnes Wolcott Vaille about noon, the sun was so warm and the wind on the other sound of the keyhole sounded like surf, a couple of seagulls and we would have had a beach day as well.
Except for the keyhole, a fair wind on the top and one time a gust blew my cap about 50' back uphill coming down the trough the weather was excellent, and the route was clear except for the minor ice which was not serious but worth being aware of.

We made the summit at 8:30 , spent about 45 minutes enjoying views and such, then made our way back down.
Before the trip we questioned the early start, and with the weather as good as it was we could have started later. But reaching the boulder field at daybreak, the summit in early morning then having all day to return was very well worth the early start.
We made it back to the ranger station by 2:30 which indluded 20 minutes for soaking in the sun and time to watch a herd of elk grazing just above treeline.
It was a most excellent day!
