Tweto & Arkansas - Fremont Pass - Attempt

For those who got out on Saturday, the word around Leadville was likely snow . . . it certainly was for us. We made an attempt of Mt. Tweto and Mt. Arkansas but were beaten back after 2 1/2 miles. The wind and snow at 12,200 was more than sufficient to turn the climb . . . visibility coming and going and the wind blown ice crystals really starting to sting. Let's call this a conditions report for the Climax area . . .

1. The road stub at the Climax hairpin is not plowed, hence parking on side of state highway, i.e. plows will get your attention

2. We found a good crust for all of the way up the valley with about 4 inches of fresh on top by noon. We broke through into deep powder perhaps only 20 times over course of 5 miles. We saw/heard no avalanche signs but the wind and fresh snow were moving all over. There looks to be a good 3 1/2 to 4 feet of snow under that crust.
