I'm a little late posting this trip report since my camera batteries died, and I just recently got the pictures from my climbing partner for the day, Nick.
Anyways, we drove down from Denver on Friday evening, Aug. 6, and camped at the Willow Lake Trailhead, then started hiking at 2:15 a.m. on Saturday so we could summit Kit Carson and Challenger both in a day. We chose to climb Kit Carson's north ridge since it looked like a good challenge, and I have to say, this route is awesome! For anyone thinking about it, it's a very exposed and committing route that involves about 1,500 vertical feet of solid class 4 scrambling, but the rock is good and the ridge is fun. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who's fairly new to class 3/4 climbs, but for those with lots of experience, I highly recommend this route.
We made it to the summit around 9:30, then traversed over to Challenger and headed down. Going down Challenger sucked, but the rest of the hike out was beautiful. The Sangres never seem to disappoint.
