Humphrey's Peak Az

Post by nyker »

Has anyone been up there recently? Wondering what snow conditions on the trail or access is like.

I was supposed to be on my way there right now to ski, it's their closing weekend. I have to work, I'm pissed.

You can see the webcam pic, from 2 minutes ago. Obviously they've kept snow on the ski runs, but looks to be thinning out elsewhere.

Regardless, record or near record snow on the mountain this year. I'd expect some snow for sure. Snow is clearly visible from near my house about 60 miles away.

Another pic. They had 5 inches the night before. The mountain doesn't look that good for skiing as you can see from the webcam. But for hiking, it gives you another look, at least from a week ago.

Lots of snow is great to legally get Agassiz

I just moved to Phoenix and I'm looking for opinions on the best time of the year to hike Humphrey's? Disclaimer... I've done minimal research so far—moving and starting a new job has consumed us lately. Thanks!

Depends on what conditions you're looking for. Late May to October is the best likelihood for a snow free climb. April and November could work too as shoulder seasons but are more wild cards with the weather. If you want to do a snow climb you'll also have to navigate around the lower snow /skiing area.

Be prepared for big wind no matter what time of year, especially once out of the saddle and above treeline, it is dense forest under that and well protected. When I climbed it in Sept 2016 I crawled the last few hundred yards under the ridge then flopped into the wind shelter, that was at like 6am. I could not stand. For me, that usually takes 45+ mph gusts, and it was sustained. Now my kid goes to NAU in Flagstaff and every time I'm there, the wind is just howling, she says it never seems to stop.

Right on. I would suggest summer as it would be a nice escape from the Phoenix heat, but be sure to start up the trail early (daybreak) as the summer Monsoon pattern is normally active there as well. Trail is easy to follow. There will be crowds on a summer weekend though.

I just climbed it in late August, was a great day. Like TurboCat said a bit breezy but not awful.

If you want to wait until summer I'd be interested in meeting up for the hike!
