Hiking the Haute Route & other suggestions in the Alps
Thought this may be a spot to find some answers to this question. Fingers crossed that my wife and I are hopefully going to be visiting the Alps near Zermatt next May. We were hoping to hike for 3-4 days along the Haute Route and stay at some of the huts. I'm curious about hiking conditions in late May though. Is that mud season in the Alps? I'm trying to figure out if the huts will even be open or if we need to rethink our timing on this portion of the trip. Also, any other suggestions besides Haute Route? Any info etc is welcome. Thanks!

My wife and I did the route form Verbier to Zermatt a few years ago. It was pretty spectacular, highly recommend. Unfortunately, we did it in September, so can't comment on conditions. I would say just bus the last leg into Zermatt. It feels a lot like hiking Pikes via the highway. All the other legs were fantastic

I'm guessing here, but I think Apr/May in the Alps is probably going to be snowy AF, I think most attempts at *skiing* the Haute Route are in Apr/May when the snow stabilizes.
Make wilderness less accessible.

Good to know! I've been researching a little more and May definitely doesn't seem optimal for weather there.

That's super early for Alps.
If you can go later then it should be awesome. I've never done the route but climbed in the area a bunch when I lived in UK. It's fantastic.
