Organizing Vermejo/Purgatoire trip

Post by laacjones »

I am trying to organize or join a trip to do Vermejo and Purgatoire on the Cielo ranch this summer. The cost to hike these peaks is $500 per person, so this is likely only for those committed to doing the bicents. The ranch only allows groups to hike these peaks on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through the end of July. Groups arrive at the ranch entrance around dinnertime the day before and the group is led in cars to the trailhead. The next day people can hike as desired and must be off the ranch by the end of the day (I think by 6 pm).

My preferred date is Sunday, June 12, so that I can end that hiking weekend somewhat close to Albuquerque. This also works reasonably well for those that need to get back to Denver. Please send me a message (laacjones) if you are interested and we'll see if we can get a group together.

I’d be interested. Message sent. Richard

For anyone who plans to complete the bicentennials but hasn’t yet done Culebra or the Culebra/Red combo, this is an opportunity to do a ridge run from Purgatoire to Culebra without having to make a separate $150 trip to get Culebra/Red. The ranch will shuttle your vehicle to the Culebra 4WD trailhead and requires that anyone doing the ridge run have at least one partner.

Does anybody know why the cost for Vermejo and Purg is more than three times that of Culebra and Red?

It's out of their way. Like, way out of the way. They clear downed trees for you, and escort you up there. Then they shuttle your vehicles. They only do this once or twice a year, and they're nice about it.
It's a mountain: get over it.

I'm interested, but not certain yet if I can get out to Colorado that weekend. Had been looking at Juneteenth holiday weekend for a mountain trip.

What kind of distance and elevation gain is the route if we're doing the ridge from Pirgatoire to Culebra?

Did this get organized and happen to end up falling on a date later than 6/25? I was supposed to hike Culebra/Red tomorrow and the ranch just cancelled tomorrow's climb...so trying to find a way to get Culebra done this year so I can finish up (and a ridge run from the 13ers would work for me to make that happen).

Yes, this trip happened.
Just try asking Carlos when you can reschedule your canceled hike.
