Oh and CMC is much cheaper than many of the other options, though less immersive than a multi-night hut trip course.
Traveling light is the only way to fly.

Just wanted to circle back and give an update.

I took both the Companion Rescue and Level 2 in the San Juans with Peak Mountain Guides two weeks ago. It was fantastic and I highly recommend taking it. It really gave me the understanding and confidence to be able to recognize avy danger both through the weather forecasts and in the field. I feel better about staying safe with the knowledge gained.

The new Rec/Pro split seems great, the Rec was focused more on decision making, reading the terrain, understanding the snowpack, and group safety and less on the snow science. We only dug a full pit and used the thermometers/magnify lens once during the course. The rest was more about on the go hasty pits and such.

I did not do a hut based course but I bet it would be a lot of fun. I definitely recommend taking both the Companion Rescue and Level 2!
