Porcupine Car Protection?

Hi all,

We're headed to the Maroons this weekend, and I've heard a lot about porcupines chewing on break lines and causing damage to cars at the Maroon Lake TH. What do people usually use to protect their cars from these critters? I'm looking for something relatively cheap I suppose.

Granulated fox urine. Available at your local hardware store.

Some people also use chicken wire (either alone or in combination with urine).

also coyote urine and mothballs are reported to work

Could you imagine pulling up to that trailhead and being the one without the lumber and chicken wire..........????

I bought coyote urine to sprinkle on my yard near downtown Denver to rid myself of a large raccoon that was re-rolling my brand new sod so it could eat the grubs underneath. I sat by the window that night and watched as the raccoon entered my backyard and went right about his business of tearing up my landscape. Several nights of me chasing it around my backyard with a broom finally got rid of it.

I don't know how coyote urine works for porcupines but it does nothing for raccoons.

I was just at the Maroon Bells, and the ranger told me to go to one of the campgrounds just before getting to the overnight parking lot. We stopped by the silver queen camp and picked up some chicken wire. They have a ton of it there for free.

I think the raccoon has to learn that coyote urine means danger. A city racccoon without exposure to coyotes wouldn't know the difference between coyote urine and stale beer urine.

I live in the 'burbs'. Plenty of raccoons and coyotes in my neighborhood. Got to keep the cats inside at night (don't want to feed the critters).

Hell! I had no idea...thanks for the thread guys.

I live in Denver...Lowell & Yale...and awoke to a coyote and a raccoon having it out in my front yard last week! I routinely see skunks and foxes....but this was a first. Perhaps the are reclaiming my neighborhood for all my intrusions into theirs!
