Has anybody driven up to the Eiseman Hut in the summer? How is the road? Doable in a Subaru Outback? Is it ok to park at the hut?
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Re: Eiseman Hut road access in the summer
I drove up there in summer several years ago. Condition of the road may well vary from year to year, but when we were up there it was pretty rough--probably rougher than I'd take an Outback on (we had a 4Runner). As you probably know the hut is a bit uphill from the road. We parked on the road for several hours without incident, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "allowed."

Yet somehow I usually make it back to the car safely; and oftentimes, so do the people that I'm with.

Re: Eiseman Hut road access in the summer
Anyone been up there recently and care to weigh in on this thread? I have been up there in the winter, but never in the summer. We will have a Tacoma and a couple of stock SUVs. We are not afraid of slow going 4 wheel drive roads, but I don't really like getting too rough with my daily driver.

Re: Eiseman Hut road access in the summer
I just drove up there on July 27 in a Grand Cherokee. The road's smooth up to the 786/719 junction (shown at 9704 feet on the Cal Topo map). Then it's fairly rough for the remainder. A few rocky spots, but not bad. More of a problem were some deep ruts and dips/potholes. No problem at all for a mostly stock Grand Cherokee with AT tires, just tedious. I also have an Outback, and am not sure whether I'd take it there. But I try to keep the Outback nice since it's one of our daily drivers, and have seen Outbacks in many places where I wouldn't take mine.
Someone had parked at the foot of the stairs that lead to the hut for the day, seemingly without a problem. It doesn't look like there's a lot of room for parking there, however. I continued about 1/4 mile past that to the end of the road where there is ample parking and plenty of room to turn around. You can see it clearly in satellite images just to the northwest of Pt. 11474 on the 11200 contour line.

I was up there in July, and I was glad to have my Tacoma and not my Outback. It's slow and rough, but doable. I parked at the stairs, since there was a tree down beyond that precluded turning around.
