Nick,
A bear is going to smell that burger.... better lock your doors.

The newest generation 4Runner has a lot of room in back, but the models without the pullout cargo tray will have a 2-3" lip right in the middle of where your back would be... Nothing a comforter and a sleeping pad wouldn't solve. If you do happen to come across a rental with the slide out tray, the cargo area is 100% flat!

I have slept in every kind of vehicle, but I am 5'10" in my dreams. My Civic suits me just fine.

I love my 99 4Runner for this type of thing, it's perfect for my photography trips where I don't want to waste time setting up and tearing down camp. Wrote a blog post about it a while back. Geared towards photographers, but same idea: http://doerzmanphoto.blogspot.com/2016/ ... et-up.html

Basically the same thing I did with '00 and now my '08 4Runner. Works out really well most of the time. I removed the rear seats from the '08 and just usually drive around as a 2 seater most of the summer.

I've always used the back of my pickup trucks with a topper to sleep in when arriving late at the trailhead or when it's raining/snowing and I don't want to deal with setting up a tent. You just have to make sure that the topper fits your year/model correctly so it has a good seal to keep out all moisture.

I'm 5' 11" and my old 2001 Ford Ranger XLT had a 6' 1" bed so it was tight but my 2010 Toyota Tundra Double Cab has a 6' 7" bed so there's plenty of room for a Thermarest, sleeping bag, gear, etc. My topper on my new truck is carpeted which provides a bit of insulation to keep the temperature within a decent range, and the windows are all sliders with screens which are great for bug free ventilation. It is also removable if I need to haul loads or take stuff to the dump. In the morning I open the tail gate and use it as a kitchen for breakfast (pots, stove, food, etc.)

I'm not sure you could get something like this as a rental but I've found found it to be a great way to go while keeping the utility of a pickup truck without buying a pop up camper or another vehicle such as a van, SUV, etc.

I went from sleeping in an Outback (an inch or two too cramped, I'm 5'11") to sleeping in an Astro AWD with a conversion bed. Such wonderful sleep is had, and the Astro can get most places the Outback could.

I'm six feet tall and sleep comfortably in my '98 4Runner. Mostly diagonally though since I currently fly han solo.

Like someone said earlier, having the option to heat up the vehicle before crawling out of the sleeping bag is great. Especially if you have remote start.

The backseats on Wrangler Unlimited (4 door) fold completely flat and has enough room to hold a queen size air mattress if you fill the mattress while it's in the back already.

Anyone have luck sleeping in a Subaru Impreza wagon?

I'm 5'10", and I need to sleep diagonal to really fit properly- anyone have tips on fitting in there somewhat comfortably, or any hacks on getting a decent night's sleep? I'm talking about little modifications or cheap foam pads and such that can make a difference.
