Are you referencing the upper TH? I'm planning for all my options, but hoping to make it up the road this weekend. If I survive the road, I'd really like to know I have a place to camp at the upper TH! :-D
Lots of nice campsites near the upper trailhead. Just camped there again on Saturday. Drove up Saturday afternoon and found no one else at any of the sites, so we had our pick of a nice site in the trees about a quarter mile before the trailhead.

Thanks IntrepidXJ! I think I saw the site where you camped - a very nice one! We ended-up camping in the trees right near the trailhead. Roughly 3 relatively solid campsites up there for anyone looking for camping options.

As far as the Nellie Creek Rd., I didn't find it all that much more challenging than Matterhorn Creek, just longer, with a slightly tougher start and then two hairpin turns after the second creek crossing. We were in a stock 4-door dodge dakota and just took things slow in the tougher spots. That said, I only saw small trucks and jeep wranglers at the upper TH, so not confident this one is "subaru-able" save for maybe the very skilled subie driver. We also drove to the upper trailhead of Yankee Boy Basin the day prior, which makes almost all other roads seem pretty mild...so that could be skewing my perception slightly!

I couldn't get past the initial obstacle on that road two years ago with my Subaru Forester. Clutch burning. As with a lot of 4WD stuff, clearance isn't enough, 4WD Low is very important when tackling more difficult terrain going up (increased torque to ease over obstacles without requiring a running start) or down (controlling speed without burning out your brakes)
