You can camp at Sanchez Reservoir on the Torcido Creek side 10 miles south of Cielo Vista Ranch. It is a State Wildlife Area so you have to have an hunting or fishing license but no other fees to camp there.

Camped here back in 2008. No complaints. There is an alternative to getting a hunting/fishing license, which is a state wildlife area pass, which is $9.00 a day, or for those 65 and over, an annual senior pass is $10.23

I've found the Sanchez to be dirty.

Hi folks,

thanks much for the suggestions. The Rito Seco area worked out - noone else there and it would have enough space for all the 20 people the CVR allows on culebra in a day.
Cement picnic tables and, actually, some "woods". its a good half hour to the gate but offers a place to cook.

cheers, mountainute

Reviving an old thread to ask a similar question:
It's clear that you can park just outside the gate the evening before hiking Culebra and set up a tent just inside the gate. Can you car camp in the parking area just outside the gate? This would save me the hassle of setting up a tent and my car sleeping arrangement is much more comfortable than my tent. I'd like to avoid jeopardizing my permit if at all possible.

Sure. I was there a year ago, and several people did exactly that.

What other peaks have people climbed with a Culebra permit? Red Mountain is nearby, so we will probably do that one as well (permit for July 6) but I'm curious if others have managed to fit in more peaks on their summit days. Are there any restrictions from the ranch on where you can hike with a Culebra permit?

The other peaks are only climbed with special permission and additional fees.

This is what you want to do. You want to be at the gate the moment they open the next morning and this will also give you the maximum sleep. There is not really camping nearby and you'll be driving in the dark hoping you don't make a wrong term. It's just less stress just going in with everyone else and following the herd.

Unless the rules have changed since I climbed it a couple of years ago, there is a designated area for camping at Cielo Vista.

However, my recollection is that the camping situation is a bit funky, hence why a lot of people opt to sleep in their vehicles.
