Re: 2022 Goals

I came out ok this year.

"I'm going to keep mine a little more general this year to give me some wiggle room. Ok here it goes...

Climb 25 Bicents (33 to go). YES

One international trip (South America or Nepal), but with the Rona who knows. YES climbed in Bolivia Pequeño Alpamayo plus others. Heading to Argentina in a week for extra credit.

Climb ice at least five times this winter finish with Stairway to Heaven route. YES

Head to Cascades for Baker Northridge and/or Forbidden Peak.(2021 carry over) YES climbed Forbidden

Climb Longs this winter via Northface (2021, 2019, 2018 carry over Haha I can never line up partners, weather and my schedule, but I am not quitting on this one ) NO, AGAIN!

Climb 6 moderate to steep snow climbs this spring. Bell Cord (2021 carry over) YES got 6, but not the BellCord"
The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker

Weather and life dealt my goals some blows this year.

1. Trip to the Adirondacks July 9th - 16th. (This includes family so I won't be able to do all the peaks I want because it has to be doable for everyone. Still working on peak list.) [Hiked Mount Marcy and Mount Ampersand, as well as some family friendly hikes on Owl's Head Lookout and the Ausable Chasm. Also went Pike fishing on Lower Lake Saranac.]
2. Trip to Lake City July 24th - 30th.
- Wetterhorn Peak [Completed July 27th. Last 2 miles of descent in lightning, hail, rain, and about 200 head of sheep in the basin. Should have turned around on the ascent but glad I completed it. Very fun mountain.]
- Uncompahgre Peak [Completed July 25th. Light rain and socked in with clouds at the top.]
- Handies Peak [Completed July 29th. Light rain for much of the hike.]
- Redcloud Peak [Unable to attempt due to lightning and bad weather.]
- Sunshine Peak [Unable to attempt due to lightning and bad weather.]
3. Trip to Leadville September 5th - 10th.[Hit a deer while crossing Kansas to reach Colorado. Lost a couple of days because of this.]
- Mt Elbert[Completed east ridge route September 7th.]
- Mt Massive[Completed southwest slopes route on September 8th.]
- Mt Belford[Did not attempt due to days lost to wreck hitting deer.]
- Mt Oxford[Did not attempt due to days lost to wreck hitting deer.]
- Huron Peak[Did not attempt due to days lost to wreck hitting deer.]

Tentative for late September/early October:
1. Bierstadt and Evans via the Sawtooth[Trip cancelled due to unexpected death of my stepson.]
2. Torreys Peak via Kelso Ridge[Trip cancelled due to unexpected death of my stepson.]

I am also considering starting late fall and spring hikes beginning in October - November 2022. These hikes will be more to keep me from going stir crazy waiting to get back to the mountains and will depend on the weather in Colorado, as well as the weather while traveling from Missouri to my destination.[Pushing back a year due to death of stepson.]

Hey Ed,
Very sorry about your stepson. I’m sure you are taking care of your first priority, that being family.

All the best,

Thank you for the kind words, Stu. I had known my stepson, Justin, for 28 years and it has been difficult for me, but I met my wife when he was 13 so I wasn't involved in raising him in the early years. She is really struggling and I expect it to be quite a few months before she feels any semblance of normality. I can only imagine what it would be like if it was one of my two children that I raised from birth.

Is there any off ramp (besides a job change) that you could take to work fewer hours? Or is the 70+ hours/week a hard requirement?

If it makes you feel any better, the Front Range is getting hurricane-force wind gusts right now. I decided to forego the beat down and just hang around town this weekend.

Several weeks ago, I suggested you tell your boss I gave you the day off. Did that not have the desired effect?

It depends on the project, but this time of year it's common (Summer and Fall) to work so much. It's definitely a requirement. It's especially busy lately since there's a lot of work to do before the mountains get buried in snow. After the snow gets deep enough to shut everything down, I'll have very little work to do until April. I can get all the time off I want then. If it weren't for insurance and having a daughter in college, I'd just take the whole time off. That's what we did before we had kids. We'd just buy a round the world plane ticket (which allows for a number of stops), leave in late November and not come back for several months.

That's the trade off. 70-90 (and sometimes over 100 [117 is my record]) hours a week in the busy season and lots of time off in the off season. if I had a normal working hours job, I wouldn't have been able to see as much as I have. Plus, I hate being in an office. I'd rather work in the mountains /cool places even if it is longer hours. Usually I work on a mountain pass all summer and fall or at least close to the mountains and cool places.

Here is a photo I took from work yesterday:

After the project is finished, I'll head to the Philippines for caving, canyoneering, and peak climbing. After that maybe Arizona or New Mexico or something while working just enough to keep the insurance.

I admit it does suck to work so much, but it's nice to have the time off in the off season.

I'm glad there's significant upside. Your "window" view there is fantastic, and sounds like you've got a fun winter planned. At the rate the snow is stacking up, maybe your project will wrap up sooner rather than later.

I've always held jobs with consistent work throughout the year. I admit it would be nice to be able to take it easy during the holiday season, or, even better, during the summer.

Couple more Cascade peaks, e.g. Adams, Shasta.
Aim for 100 K vertical over the course of the year, and / or 400 miles hiking. 51000 vertical for the year, not awful not great.

Re: 2022 Goals

Post by Scott P »

Well, we only have one month left. I hope everyone completed some good goals out there and is looking forward to completing more in December. This weekend I'm visiting family, the weekend after that I'm going to do a backpack somewhere, and after that I'm leaving for the Philippines so I won't complete many more of my goals for the year, but still hope to get as much as I can.

Once again, I could use some partners for some of the technical stuff if anyone is interested. It would be really appreciated and all of the technical goals are of modest climbs (I don't climb hard stuff anymore). Anyone is welcome to join me for the non-technical trips as well. I'd be willing to do other things that aren't on my list too. Just PM me if you are interested. Thanks to all that joined me this year.

Anyway, as of November 30:

Generic Goals for 2022

Hiking and Climbing Days = 330-Currently at 303. I am right on target. I'll lose some time due to flying though so I'm going to be cutting it close.
Summits Climbed = 170-Currently at 174. I made the goal this year already, but most have been repeats. I only got 43 new peaks in this year. Ug.
Rock Towers/Technical Buttes = 10-Currently at 1. I am way behind. I need partners, but time is running out.
Technical Rock or Ice Routes = 30-Currently at 14. I am way behind. If anyone is in the GJ area or on the Western Slope, I can use some partners, but time is running out.
Technical Canyons = 25-Currently at 31. I am ahead of my goal for that one.
Backpack every month of the year-Completed January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October., and November So far, so good. The only weekend I have available the rest of the year is December 10-11 so I'm going rain, snow, hail, or shine.

Hiking_TheRockies wrote: Thu Jan 20, 2022 8:55 pm Hoping to climb a number of new 14ers, mainly in the sawatch range. I am also hoping to climb a difficult 13er or 14er in winter/snow, something that I have never done.
I want to do at least one backpacking trip because I have never backpacked before. I also would like to do more than 200 miles on peaks and trails this year.
The thing I am most excited for is hopefully attempting Sawtooth Ridge!
3/5 for this year.
New 14ers - 6 this year, 5 of which were in the Sawatch. Good, but not quite what I was hoping for. I'm gonna ramp it up next year.
Difficult snow 13er/14er - I did a 13er in the snow, but I don't think it met the "difficult" requirement—Square Top Mountain off of Guanella Pass. I did have a great time, though, so I will continue trying to hit 13ers and 14ers in the winter.
Backpacking - Definitely got this one. I backpacked 10 days in June.
200 Miles - FINALLY! From June 1 to August 31, I hiked 206 miles and did 61,000 feet of elevation gain. For the entire year, I'm somewhere around 240 miles and pushing 75,000 feet of gain.
Sawtooth Ridge - Well, during a hike Evans from Guanella Pass, I leaned my head over the side of the Sawtooth the see if the exposure is really that bad. Yeah, it was terrifying, but I am even more sold on this ridge. Next year!!

Overall, good hiking season. I'm gonna push even harder next year.

Happy Holidays, everyone!
