possible tornado on flanks of Pikes Peak

"a few miles short of the summit" that could be anywhere.
I hate when the don't give a better idea of the location.
Yeah, rare up high, but still happens.
I guess it could have just been winds, we've all seen evidence of this on hikes.

I had gone up Pikes this morning for the sunrise event. I guess it was somewhere around mile 6, or 7. Took out some power lines. Apparently the summit house was running on generators this morning...

I didn't know that there are power lines all the way to the summit. I thought that the summit always uses generators?

Found a map of where it hit - looks like it crossed the Pikes Peak Highway west of Crystal Creek Reservoir, then over the SW part of the reservoir, then over the highway again.

Yeah, overhead lines go from Chipita Park to Glen Cove. From there, it's underground conductor beneath the highway to the summit. Utilities map link included in case anyone's curious - go to the map layers, turn on Electric (both overhead (solid) and underground (dashed), and zoom in to the Crystal Creek Reservoir area.
