On the flip side, I've never used anything with my Jeep for over 14 years and have NEVER had an issue with mice, marmots, porcupines, etc. chewing on wires or making a home in my vehicle. And its been all over Colorado's mountains countless times. I've left it alone during days, nights, sometimes 2,3,4 nights in a row probably over 100 times.
Its yellow. That's why. Marmots and their friends HATE yellow. I give yellow vehicles a 5-star rating!
the wiring issue is due to automotive manufacturing companies switching to plant-based materials to insulate wiring harnesses instead of rubber in recent years. this was a non-issue on my 04 and 06 wranglers.
that said, i did get snuck upon by a mountain lion in my blue jeep, but never my yellow one.. and my blue jeep was totaled in an accident that was not my fault, but my yellow one wasn't. so i cannot possibly discredit that theory. yellow vehicles are, in fact, the best.
That came out good. A mountain lion came up in a bluebjeep? And it was your blue jeep? I think Ill take my chances with the rascally marmots.
I believe the totalling of your vehicle was not your fault unless you left keys on them. Cats can't resist an easy theft.

Hey everyone, my truck got it's wired chewed by a marmot up at upper Nellie Creek TH a few weeks ago, got lucky with only the headlight wiring chewed to the point it didn't work. Curious if anyone has tried this Honda spicy electric tape https://www.collegehillshonda.com/produ ... -2317.html

just wanted to follow up on the rodent device i use on my 4Runner. i actually had an opportunity to sit with it for a few hours last week by Animas Forks. our campsite was right next to some chipmunks who were DYING to jump into our snacks, so i flipped it on and enjoyed a silver bullet while i watched a few of them approach, and then suddenly, quite frantically scamper off.
to add insult to injury, i got up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break and i triggered the alarm. if i hadn't been returning from my break, the sound would have scared the bathroom right out of me. honestly if i'd realized how well the device works, i don't know if i'd have spent the time snow fencing my vehicle in near the top of Engineer Pass the day before when we packed into American Flats. i'm really curious now if anyone has had this particular device fail

I'll let you know. I bought the product that you linked above and have been using it everywhere I've parked so far this summer. So far so good, but anecdotes of it not failing don't confirm that it 100% works. I saw a marmot poking around under my car on one occassion, but no warning lights. Maybe he was just checking out some smells, maybe he got scared off. Time will tell. I am curious if this device works better for chipmunks than marmots/porcupines, who are the real threat.
I had $400 worth of damage to wires, which resulted in driving home from Beartown (where it happened) without cruise control. Yes, marmot proof. fencing rocked down around your vehicle, and the coyote urine thing (unless lots of rain washes it away), work. Annoying.
Not really, and who knows how much it matters? I was recently parked in prime porcupine territory for a few days. Most of the (few) other cars I saw were fenced, some were not. The first morning I started out, I spotted a great big porcupine in my headlamp, waddling toward the car to check it out. I chased it, dosed it with bear spray, then sprayed some on the underside of my car before heading out. Nothing got chewed that I've noticed.
Me and my dad used the tarp method this summer for our two big Wemmiuche backpacks from Beartown. It worked well for the truck. We also brought a second, smaller tarp to wrap our big backpacks for day trips. The "Marmot Burrito" kept the marmots in Sunlight Basin, Vestel Basin, and around Jagged Saddle from eating our sweaty backpack straps (a few definitely tried).
