I normally avoid weekend camping or hiking like the plague. But this year, the Sunday-Tuesday of Labor Day weekend are my last chance to get out this season . I plan to arrive in the area around noon on Sunday before Labor Day. What are my chances of finding ANY walk up or dispersed site along Halfmoon road, near Twin Lakes, or along 390? I was able to reserve a site on Monday but have no guarantee for Sunday night, which I don’t like when coming from out of town.
I don’t need anything spectacular and know no one will reveal their secret spots. But any advice on places to look if I am finding nothing in these areas? Or is it likely I could be SOL and should make another plan? Thanks for any help (or hope) anyone can provide!
There's a big, flat, open field for camping along 390 near the Winfield ghost town. No cost, no amenities, decent outhouses. You won't have a problem finding a spot to camp/car camp there. A lot of people camp there for doing Huron, La Plata, and the Apostles.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

I asked pretty much the same question earlier in season. Above are the responses.
There are a lot of spots. I don’t think you’ll be out of luck. Non reserve nfs sites - parry peak, twin peaks, two loops of lake view are first come first serve.
Informal spot I recently found - just past first sharp turn west of twin lakes on 82. Right hand turn on north side of Hiway. Old quarry parking lot type thing.
Lots of spots informal spots around south Elbert TH
Thank you both! That gives me a bit more hope. I was reading through the many posts here about Halfmoon being overrun with large groups and partying on weekends, and wasn’t sure what to expect about the first come first serve sites west of White Star and the lakes. I’ll probably steer clear of Halfmoon and search your suggestions.
I had planned on doing Massive but might opt for La Plata if I end up off 82 or 390. Thanks again!
