Purgatory trailhead questions

Post by rdp32 »

I am planning an upcoming trip to the Weminuche, hiking in from the Purgatory trailhead. I have two questions about that trailhead:

1. Is it fine to sleep in my car at that trailhead? Is it a quiet/private area?
2. Do I need to worry about marmots/porcupines/etc. chewing on the wiring/hosing of my vehicle at that trailhead? I know this is a problem at many trailheads in the general region, and was wondering if it is a known issue there (I have never done anything to prevent critter abuse before)

Thanks in advance for any responses!

You could probably sleep there and nobody would hassle you. It’s not all that private though. I would camp off the forest road behind Purgatory or a short bit down Lime Creek road and I think that would be more enjoyable.

I wouldn’t really worry about critters there. I guess it’s possible but probably an unlikely problem. The road is paved and there’s a fair bit of traffic and home construction activity in the area.

No critters there. I think I would camp somewhere else unless you plan on getting there late in the evening. It’s in sort of a residential area with people coming and going.
The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker

I'll just echo what the other two said.
Zero worries about critters chewing your lines and such. Only thing there are chipmunks & squirrels.

Like desert dog said, the area is semi residential. I lived in the apartments across from Twilight Lake for two years. While it is quiet, locals do run the trail around the lake and walk their dogs frequently. Some of the second home owners & tourists will be out fishing in the early am; but ppl will leave you alone.
You'll be fine.
