Fairplay FKT

Post by k_fergie »

FKTs seem to always be a hot topic on the forum, so I, a master of speed, have found a new one of great excitement for the community. I figure I'd throw this out as a PSA/FYI.

In late April, the town of Fairplay installed at least one speed camera on Main Street and is sending tickets in the mail. I was fortunate enough to earn myself an FKT (First Known Ticket), as my $40 violation's ticket # was in the single digits of their highly anticipatory 8-digit numbering system. . The race officiant that verified my achievement is located on the north end of town and is positioned to get you right as the speed limit drops from 35 (maybe even 45, I can't remember) to 25 around a corner, so you cannot slow-roll down to 25 like a normal human being. You have to pre-brake before seeing the speed limit change, lest you pay that s**t-county a fine. I challenge y'all to not do that as hopefully others won't get their own FKTs passing through town.

Good info to know!

About 10 years ago I was awarded a special certificate by a fine officer in Alma. (And I swear he tagged some guy behind me speeding into town.) I was simply scanning the sides of the road for a lunch spot after hiking Quandary so I know I was going very slowly. We had a lovely conversation about texting while driving and how dangerous it was and how it was expressly prohibited. He was wondering if I had been partaking in Oktoberfest "activities" in Breck. I pointed at my gritty attire and pack and assured him I had been hiking and only hiking. It eventually devolved into a lecture about elk in Hartsel and how its important to keep an eye out and not exceed the posted speed limit or risk a collision with them. Hartsel was full of them. It continued into a monologue about a crack in my windshield. After accepting the certificate, I thanked him profusely for the valuable advice and slinked out of town. I never did grab lunch. And I haven't spent a dime in Alma since.

Perhaps this info will save Fairplay from my wrath.
- I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was blaming you.

Just FYI: Alma is patrolled by Fairplay police.
And for lunch in Alma, Otto's is an excellent option.

I thought there was some CO rule that police shouldn't set speed traps within 100 yards or so from a newly posted speed limit. Probably i am wrong about that, because that would just seem too much common sense.

Maybe the sign has been there for awhile, but the camera is new? I've watched a cop ticket people coming into the south end of Silverton all afternoon, where the limit changes to 25 on a steep downhill. He was definitely collecting more than his salary, but a camera would be even cheaper.

Fairplay has been under heavy construction centered around the 285/9 intersection, so it tracks that they've made some additional improvement, esp. along the north side of 285 coming out from Como. They've got a big sign that says "Fairplay" and everything! And on the other side of the intersection of the sign is a sample boulder of ore that closely matches one you can find on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.

It's 35mph prior to the curve. And there *is* a warning before you get to the actual 25mph zone. So you *can* slow-roll down to 25 like a normal human being.
