I had a surfing lesson in Galveston once. The instructor gave me a board about the size of a thumbnail and expected me to succeed. His motivation was "Have you ever heard of Erik Weinhenmayer? He's a blind climber who has never surfed before and he did MUCH better than you're doing"!

I've known many accomplished mountaineers but there is only one who I'd call my favorite. Steve McKinney. Used to run into him on the north shore of Tahoe. Originally know as the faster man alive on a pair of skis. First to break 200 kph. Then he hang glided Everest. Sadly he died at a young age...killed by a drunk driver. Funny guy and mountain royalty.

I use SO MUCH of Bob’s beta for obscure California peaks when I am out visiting family several times a year. He has climbed everything!
