I would have been petrified climbing that group in the midst of a storm, waiting for a buzzer to bonk you. Job well done. As mentioned by Doggler earlier, the big vulnerability is being able to do the Maroon group in one trip; otherwise, I expect them to be neck and neck, barring weather.

I would not want media attention with urbanites and "hiked-hanging-lake-once" class hikers following my blog and from the character descriptions, I find it hard to believe Prater would want it either. Much less, this early in the attempt. This isn't to say he isn't deserving, of course.

That's what I thought, but this passage in the blog had me confused:
I met Homie and Loobster at the train station and after pulling out Homie's gear from Loobster's pack, we bid him goodbye and headed for the Kilpacker Trailhead via Ophir Pass.

Sort of. No muling or pacers-in-front, but pacers behind are allowed.

You are supposed to carry your own water, gear, and food when climbing and descending the peak. Approach trails, roads, etc. don't count, otherwise you'd have to do the whole thing unsupported by foot.

I would love to know all the "rules of this game," as I'm sure many readers are wondering exactly the same.

For instance, you gotta start 3,000' below the first peak of a group, and can ridge-walk any beyond that, and then can't be picked up until you've gone 3,000' down from the last one of the series? And then start the 3,000' again once a new cluster is started?

And, do you need to simply TOUCH the top of the summit (highest point), or actually STAND on it? (Sunlight, etc.)

Curious about this as well. Does that mean on a long approach climb (e.g. KC/Challenger) he could be carried on piggyback or drive an ATV to the point that is 3000' below the summit?

Good questions. Here are the unofficial rules per Cave Dog's website:

All the rules are laid out on Cave Dog's website.
3,000 absolute feet below the first summit of a group, and can traverse to adjacent peaks, descending 3000'+ absolute from the final peak in the chain. Once you enter a vehicle or become assisted, that starts a new series.

I think as far as carrying things goes, he carries what he uses while hiking, but additional supplies and gear are muled around for him- as CaveDog did.

Did Cave Dog do 55 summits? Is Homie going for 58?

55 is the standard, per Cavedog's rules. If Homie adds any, the next guy will have to do them also.

He appears to be heading up Silver Creek now. Using the Sundog route one way or the other makes sense, but whether up or down is an interesting question.

I wonder if SPOT's site will handle the load it's going to get today, once the link hits the news media.
