I think you missed the initial picture or had your sarcasm detector turned off before you posted.swadmin wrote:what rough? this morning at the trailhead.

Not to sidetrack too much, but does anyone know what time Grays TH fills up on weekdays this time of year? I know weekends the upper lot is full by 5am at least. Hoping weekdays are a little later.

Sunday morning we got there around 6:30 and were able to find a spot about 100 yards from the upper lot.

Re: Grays and Torreys road getting rough
I am planning to hike Grays/Torrey's on Sunday 8/26. I am flying into Denver that morning and unfortunately won't be able to get to trailhead until about 11:30am. I realize weekends are very busy, but realistically how close to the trailhead parking lot will I be able to park? I'm trying to gauge overall hike distance and hiking... I am *hoping* there will be some parking spot opening(s) from some of the early hikers leaving at about that time. Is that realistic? Thanks! Jeff

Honestly, 11:30 is far too late to start hiking. I highly recommend reassessing your plansjfofun wrote:I am planning to hike Grays/Torrey's on Sunday 8/26. There probably *will* be some spots available by that point. Now, the wisdom of starting your hike at 11:30 is a different story...jfofun wrote:I am planning to hike Grays/Torrey's on Sunday 8/26. I am curious why you believe starting at 11:30am is too late...is it t-storm potential in afternoon, or other? Thanks!AlexeyD wrote:There probably *will* be some spots available by that point. Re: Grays and Torreys road getting rough
Yep, primarily. Storms can roll in quickly and without significant warning. If you recognize incoming inclement weather, even on a relatively short hike like Grays/Torreys, it will be likely an hour or two before you get below treeline. That's a lot of exposed time. Starting that late puts you in exposed territory during the time of the day when t-storms are the most prevalent, and keeps you in it for the entirety of your hike.jfofun wrote:is it t-storm potential in afternoon

If you start that late, you will die/fail.jfofun wrote:I am curious why you believe starting at 11:30am is too late...is it t-storm potential in afternoon, or other? In all seriousness, don't do that. Doing summer monsoon season you should not be starting that late, period. Do some more research on what 14ers entail before potentially getting yourself into a bad situation.
Re: Grays and Torreys road getting rough
Yeah, the big problem with nowcasting the weather on Gs/Ts is since the storm regime is coming from the southwest, you will be unable to spot thunderstorm development until it is right over you since the 14ers completely block the view in that direction. Hopefully you packed your portable faraday cage
