It's substantial. They're just less forgiving overall cause they're soft and lightweight... More chatter, more give. If you edge hard the boots "fold" on you. It's more calculated, finesse skiing. "Power" skiing is really difficult. But good skimo guys can make flimsy lightweight boots look like downhill boots are being skied even on steep techy descents. They're just more on the edge of the limits of the gear than it appears.
I ski AlienRS's in the backcountry (similar to the F1LTs). They're stiff enough in 90% of conditions and their low weight really lets you scoot. FWIW, the ski-boot pairing makes a big difference too.
Traveling light is the only way to fly.

+1 for Paul Davis also, dude is nuts. He's the guy who completed Satan's Ridge (Capitol to Snowmass) in trailrunners and also recently did the Megamoronal traverse (whole Maroon bells basin from Buckskin Pass down around to Pyramid)

cool, im still on my first pair of backcountry boots and theyre on the softer side, think im gonna give stiffer ones a try for my next pair

I've followed Michael on Instagram for some time because he was skiing the Elks in previous spring and I was interested in beta. He's definitely incredibly fast, and I agree that risk assessment changes with experience, so don't be judgey. My understanding that he's able to ski all these lines in Scarpa LT FT boots (which I struggled mightily last winter) unlike most athletes in that realm who prefer much stiffer boots - Technica Zero Gs for most and the Cody Townsend skis in Salomons (his sponsor). Just an interesting tidbit.

Pretty sure Michael is skiing in Zero g tour pros actually, but either way, he is a very talented skier, and the speed he moves also means less actual time in the terrain. Not saying he is not taking risks but he sure is getting in and out quick. That elks ski project is still the coolest thing he's done IMO and I am hoping for a release of the film 53/13 about it soon

Scarpas LT FTs, no helmet and no whippet! Until the end I kept wondering how the heck he was going to ski Landry as #3, but it all made sense in the end. Rad.
Is the mountain in question in his video that's posted at the end of page 3 of this string? It looks like that line is in the intro to that video between 35 -40 seconds in. I'm probably wrong, but what do you think?
