Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
Should the name of KC be changed? In my opinion, No. But if a name change should take place then I always feel that it should be changed to reflect what it was once called by the indigenous people of the area. That would be more fitting and a "up yours" Kit Carson.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
I think I would much rather put a petition out renaming peaks with the same name than by adding a another. Having two wilsons and crestones is way too confusing. Change the name of Wilson Peak to Coors peak and the Crestone Needle to Needle Peak or The Needle. If we must rename Kit Carson name it something other than Crestone. Name it Discovery Peak, I really don't care. But please don't add another Crestone.
Bad decisions make good stories.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
The Board of Geographic Names was exploring changing the name of Mt. Clay (in New Hampshire) to Mount Reagan. Luckily, enough people wrote in to complain so they dropped the idea.
Did you know that the word gullible is NOT in the dictionary?

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
Having been involved in the peak naming process several times, I can tell you it is far easier to name a peak then to rename one.
Why irradicate our historical past? We already have Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle and Mount Crestone seems silly to me.
Why not name Pt. 13799 something profound like Baldy
There are still quite a few unnamed 13ers in the area, have at it. If there's no local opposition, it should be easy, but the BGN even with local support will scrutinize the renaming of a geographic feature as there is far more to consider.

Kit Carson killed a great many Native Americans and he was also revered by a great many Native Americans. I'm comfortable with the characterization of it all as a time of war, and he a solder, even if it was a conquest. "Blood and Thunder" by Hampton Sides is a truly great book on the subject and the era.

Re: Petition to rename Kit Carson
I vote against renaiming Kit Carson, it is what it is. I feel also that it would be a dishonor to those that have perished on this mountain. If it were to be renamed it should somehow be in there honor, not a 3rd point with the name Crestone.

Agree. KC does NOT need to be renamed.
If ANYTHING needs to be remaned, let's start with all the Bald, Deer and Sheep Mountains/peaks we have in Colorado.

While we're on the subject, I think we should rename Blanca Peak as well. Naming a peak after the electrified green-skinned ape-man creature from Street Fighter II only further promotes violence in video games. Won't someone please think of the children???

man I love Blanca - Guile was always my favorite but I beat M Bison the first time with Blanca - kinda sad I still remember that as a childhood accomplishment.
edit: to stay on topic - i voted against renaming - no need in my opinion unless there's a proud indigenous name with a bunch of history that isn't getting any attention (like Denali vs McKinley).

I say we rename the peak Bill Carson!

He's buried in the grave next to Arch Stanton, you know.
Or name it Mount Tuco Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez.

I agree. Who's to say that, in another hundred years, today's "war heroes" aren't going to be viewed as "war criminals" by the moral standards of the day? And if that happens, are future generations going to rename everything we've designated as a tribute to those heroes/criminals? You can't change the past, but you can learn from it.Tortoise1 wrote:Kit Carson killed a great many Native Americans and he was also revered by a great many Native Americans. 3rd? We have Crestone Peak, "Northeast Crestone," "East Crestone," Crestone Needle... yeah, enough with the Crestones already.ebnhils wrote:I vote against renaiming Kit Carson, it is what it is. Remember when we were mortified by that command: "Finish Him!" and the subsequent tearing out of the opponent's spine? That is NOTHING by today's gaming standards. What's "OK" and "not OK" changes a lot over time... sometimes a very short time. Kind of like the actions of Kit Carson.George Kaplan wrote:While we're on the subject, I think we should rename Blanca Peak as well. Best movie ever! But I still think we need to keep the name as it is.timstich wrote:I say we rename the peak Bill Carson!
