This week went for an overnight backpack at Lost Creek Wilderness and spotted these Aspens turning. I've never seen leaves turn this early, it caught me by surprise . Wow, aren't we in the middle of August? I always thought that seasonal shift is triggered by shorter days and cooling temperatures. Makes you wonder if this is a preview of an early fall due to the extreme dry conditions?

aspens can do this when they are heat/drought stressed, just give up and try again next year

On a more serious note, I drive back and forth from Montrose to Telluride several times a day and in 4 years I had seen 1 bear on the road.

This past week I have seen 3. One had climbed to the top of a tree just a few feet off the road searching for who knows what?

Oh yeah, searching for food. I suspect I am seeing all these bears as they come closer to human habitation because they are starving.

Anyone else noticing a change in bear behavior?

Yes. Bear sightings in Fort Collins are much higher than normal. As they enter hyperphagia we're gonna see lots more hunting for acorns and apples.

There have been a lot of bears in Grand Juction and Fruita too, which isn't normal. I assume their normal water sources have dried up and they're after water.

Definitely. They've been ripping apart logs for weeks now and I usually only see that in the fall. A neighbor had one inside a week ago, and even after it was out, it still stuck around. Someone left our dumpster open and a bear had a feast there, so of course now it's coming back every night hoping for another idiot that didn't lock it up.

I've seen more bears this summer than I have in the previous 18 years that I have lived and hiked in Colorado.

Jeez, now the bears are trying to burn houses down...

From FB this morning: "CBFPD responded to a reported residential structure fire in Mt. Crested Butte after a bear entered a private residence and unintentionally started a fire.
Law enforcement safely addressed the bear and the fire contained to the kitchen. No injuries were reported."
