If you see something - say something

I spotted smoke deeper in waterton canyon last weekend - and within 30 seconds decided it was 911 worthy.

i had good vantage of it all from the flanks of goat mtn - which i like to bust up sometimes in summer even though i couldn't take that thing entirely in the heat.

this is what i 1st saw

it was actually pretty epic for me - because of that great vantage i had told the 911 operator to have them call back if they needed more help spotting - and they did call. i tried to give position relative to goat mtn and also followed up with a few pics too. and i pushed myself to one higher ridge to get that much better look .

by the end - i was pretty invested in this thing. i was about to tell the firefighters staging on my way back "hand me a shovel, I'm ready to jump in this thing!"

Are normal hikers/climbers like me morally obligated to move out of the way promptly to make way for someone working on an FKT attempt?

mystery car at base of drainage of north side of whale peak?

it will take me a bit to get pic uploaded - but there is a rolled old 4x4 of some kind at base of this gully on north side of whale peak.

cab is crushed in. looks to be like pretty old? but the thing is - there is nothing resembling a road in that gully. my best guess is maybe this thing rolled off the top of whale? it was pretty beat up.

i read about fatal 4x4 accident in whale area circa 2007 - but this seemed older than that. article about that one didn't have details.

this one here conveys how weirdly out of place this whole scene is:

any insights? like i said - the only logical path i saw to that thing being there was seemingly tumbling off the top of whale?

_____

and mini-trip report taboot here - seemingly i would never hit whale from guanella as most seem to - just because if i'm on that pass i almost just have to get to top and do stuff up there. so taking whale from the west was the only way.

although you could go thru montezuma too - but that seemed to be old news and this allowed for a look at the southern end of the montezuma area. 12 miles overall though - many flat along the road.

i actually overshot my mark too - I found the truck at base of the ridge i meant to come up! but i took whale the whole way instead from east to west.

Goats on a whale!

that fall rust color is in full effect up there too....

OK i'm getting PM's all the time requesting me to finally tell the story of where to find good driftwood walking sticks.

The shores of chatfield dam along the dam!

I used one stick for all of 2022 and right up until it busted coming off the whale hike above. Busted hard too - i fell and crushed my hand against it. and in ensuing pain i smashed the remnants to little bits too.

but so i went back to try to find replacement - and I felt like i was shoe shopping! lots of different sizes to choose from. got just the right one for me.

These driftwood sticks seem a little firmer than standard wood? but also polished by the water / sun. My new model is bone white and a little thicker than last year's.

What about peak bagging with jet packs on? Think there will be wilderness restrictions or maybe not? I can see that being a clear violation of the ADA to restrict people from achieving that.

Would the FAA have to step in to keep lazy ass people from jetpacking to the top of Quandary?
