Personally, I think another "Crestone" would cause plenty of confusion and lessen the name. To summarize, we would have Mt. Crestone, Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle and Crestone Peaks (yes, an official GNIS feature). If the other Crestones were named by mistake then the appropriate request might be to right the original wrong and request a renaming of all these peaks. Otherwise, getting Kit Carson renamed to Mountain Crestone seems (to me) like it would be only a partial "fix."

Take care

Renaming all points to original names and having a unique name for each point would be best. If your going to rename peaks do it right, not just to get a part of a name you want. That seems a waste of everyone's time to me.

I guess we should rename Blanca while we're at it. "Blanca Massif" with distinct highpoints: Little Bear, Blanca Peak, and Ellingwood Point...

Hey...it's 2010.
Why not just sell the naming rights?

You can't go naming a bunch of mountains "Baldy." That would be offensive to the follicly challenged among us.

Shakespeare had it right:
"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet..."

After all the squabbles and petitions, the mountain will remain, silent and unmoveable. Whether we change its name or not, the great peak still stands high above it all, unsullied by hubris and politics, unchanged and unchanging. Stand and marvel, climb and behold -- the mountain is to be savored and cherished, to be appreciated and respected. It does not change, why should we seek to change its name? What matters more, in my humble opinion, is to protect the mountain, not to rename it. If all the energy aimed at changing the mountain's name were invested in preserving and protecting it, then we'd all be better off, and so would be the mountain. We should all care more about the mountain than about what we call it.

So how about:
"Kit Carson at Crestone Mountain"
or
"The Mountain formerly known as Kit Carson" - but wait, is it Crestone Mountain formerly known as Kit Carson that was formerly known as Crestone Mountain??...

Ridiculous! Keep KIT CARSON!
To God be the Glory! What a priviledge it is to be alive and enjoy His creation!

It would be interesting to see what Native Americans and early Spanish/Mexican settlers called it.

I'd like to see her renamed to "Trois Tetons".
I like the sound of that.

There might have been a Ute name; you might write the tribes (several Ute reservations). Saguache, Cochetopa, and Uncompaghre are Ute place names.

There were no early Mexican settlers in the Crestone area; although there was a family at the Medano Ranch, but Texans ran them off (sheep, cattle, etc.). Luis Maria Baca Grant No. 4 was an anglo operation.

Well, if the name of the game is changing peak names for political correctness...we must now change Mount Princeton because Princeton is just too liberal. Oh wait, so is Harvard, Yale, and who even thought about naming a peak Democrat! Wow!
