14ers list by difficulty

Post by Fisher »

What happened to the 14ers list by difficulty. The color coded one, not the routes by difficulty page?

Assume you are talking about the user-voted difficulty ranking of 14ers? That was one of my favorite lists on the website, I hope it returns.

I didn't realize it was gone, that's sad. One might say that the routes by difficulty page is similar, however it doesn't rank difficulty of routes in the same class in relation to each other. If it did that then it would be even more useful than the old page. It was always useful to consult that list to get an idea of what is the "next step" in difficulty compared to the routes I've already mastered.

Glad I made a copy of it in Excel.

I find Roach Points in his 3rd edition useful for ranking routes.

Over the last 7 years only 376 people actually ranked the peaks using that page, so the data was based on a very small sampling. IMO, it really wasn't more valuable than the "Grouped by Difficulty"

IIRC contributing to the rankings on that page required you to decide on every peak in the list; anyone who gave it a bit of thought would realize that if they haven't completed the vast majority of 14ers, they're better off refraining from contributing since arbitrarily ranking the peaks they haven't done would make the list less accurate overall. That's why I never contributed to the rankings, anyway. Nevertheless if the small sampling represented people who actually knew what they were talking about, a survey of a few hundred people is quite a bit better than nothing. I've used it e.g. to infer that one should try Torreys before Lindsey, or Longs before Crestone Peak, or Crestone Needle before Capitol.

You could conceivably allow folks to rank only the peaks they've completed; if lots of people participate in this, then you'd have a few complete lists, plus a whole lot of varying data about the peaks relative to each other. There are algorithms out there that can use such data on "head to head match-ups" to come up with an accurate aggregated rating - such as the Elo rating system for chess players: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

It would be even more valuable to rank routes in this way instead of, or in addition to, peaks.

I'm one to talk though since I wouldn't be the one writing it... necessarily ;)

"Only?" That seems like a decent number. Depending upon how ranking was implemented, I might have actually ranked the 14ers after finishing them. Ordering them 1 to 54 (or 58 if you're new-school) would have been artificial, but putting them in 4-5 bins would have been easy and useful.

i sort of made my own with elevation gain, distance, and then a comparison of the two... don't mind sharing if anyone finds that valuable?
