14ers FKT Attempt July 5-20 Self-Supported

Post by Jorts »

For those who don’t know me, I’m Brent. I live in Summit and volunteer for our SAR team (Summit County Rescue Group) - both of these in part because I enjoy moving through mountains. I’ve been enamored with that arbitrary magical elevation of 14k since dragging my wife up Quandary within 2 weeks of moving out here back in 2010 and having what I promised would be a 2.5hr hike take over 5.

Back then I told myself I’d complete all the 14ers in a few years, but then we had kids and that goal was displaced with bagging local, more accessible summits. Earlier this year I explained to my wife that I wanted to finally finish all the 14ers… noting that it would require many weekends away all summer long. She was not thrilled about this but supportive nonetheless. Then I thought maybe I’d like to bike them all like Justin Simoni for my 40th birthday. But a full month away from work and family… yeah, no. So next I considered recruiting all my friends and family to support me in going around and doing them as fast as possible but 1) I don't have the the logistical prowess for something like that and 2) I’d never be faster than the master Andrew Hamilton anyway. I was inspired by these legends all the same.

So instead of selfishly inconveniencing my family on a weekly basis for an entire summer or 2, I decided I’d just try to summit all 58 in a couple weeks by driving between them solo like Peter Jones did back in 1995. Kind of the goldilocks between self-powered and balls out fully supported.

Peter had the advantage of less crowded roads and trailheads, and presumably less construction. While I have the advantage of bottomless beta, and GPS technology. My “A” goal is to beat 16d13hr43min; “B” goal is to do them all under 18 days; “C” goal is just to finish all the ones I have yet to do; and “D” goal is to summit as many 14ers in cutoff jeans shorts as feasible.

I’ll have a SPOT tracker page here:

Here’s my loose itinerary:

I’ll also upload to Strava and try to keep up on Instagram posts when I have service.

I really appreciate Bill starting this community and I'm grateful for the support, beta, scrutiny and criticism you all provide.

And though I’m not into goading others to donate to a good cause just because I’m doing some sort of physical challenge, please continue supporting SCRG and Colorado SAR. Unlike many states, CSAR is always free and always available. Your donations help us stay prepared to respond.

Great project! The logistics for a supported CO 14er record are insane. This version, requiring only a car and sufficient fitness and motivation, is much more accessible. Good luck!
