Roads around Silverton

Post by Sluglas »

Is there a website or source to find out the condition of roads in San Juan County, Colorado i.e. are they passable yet? Interested in getting to the trailhead in Cunningham Gulch for Highland Mary Lakes (climb of Mountaineer Peak).

Some of the country road and bridge sites update their websites for the high mountain passes conditions. I find its easier to look at some of the jeep rental websites, as they combine everything from all the different counties and also get user reports. See the link below, but it shows Cunningham Gulch as closed still.

This is what I use when looking at backcountry passes/roads. It's updated by users who've been there recently, but also limited to people who know about and use the site. http://bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm

This one is good too, this is like 14ers.com Trailhead Status but posted by the OHV crowd.

Thanks everyone, exactly what I was looking for.

BTW, my dream is to someday run into Wild Wanderer/Laura on an obscure 13er in the San Juans. I missed her by one day last summer!!!!

Laura, two issues:

1. You're too fast for me and
2. That would ruin the magic of just running into you!!!

But I might do it anyway this summer. Thanks for the invite.

I’ll be darn! I should have said hi. I saw you descending as I was going up in the morning. Well, I’ll say it this time… Hi!! Hope you are well!

Hi back!!! Quandary is my go-to peak when I'm training but the conditions are poor in other areas. It's reliable :)
