Is Mt. Evans Road free to drive without parking?

Post by quackquackcolorado »

It's been nearly a decade since I've been up there, and I know that policies have changed (for the worst). I'm hoping to ride my motorcycle up to the top and down without parking in the developed areas. Is it still free to do this without making any reservation?

I believe you need a reservation and they are timed entries of when you can go to the top.

Looks like motorcycles w/ 1 person $3 and w/ 2 people $6.

I believe Summit Lake requires a parking permit.
I should be on a mountain

You need one if you park at the top and walk around.
Since it's a state highway, you can drive up and down without a permit but once you "visit" the amenity areas (Mt. Goliath visitor center, Summit Lake, Summit), you need a reservation ahead of time.

Good to know. Didn't think the reservation policy could get around the state highway issue. I was also able to confirm the same from this article too: https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/m ... ons-entry/

If you arrive after 6:30PM and leave by 8:00AM it is free to park as well, to my knowledge.

Went up there today. Can confirm I breezed through the entrance station after saying the magic words. the reservation system is definitely keeping the crowds down, but it's obvious some people are aware of the loophole based on their parking

Last week, I noticed someone pulling into the parking lot at summit lake and stopping next to the toilets. A ranger immediately walked up to the person and asked for proof of a reservation or something similar, since I saw the guy showing some paperwork.

I bought one anyway for when I do it in 10 days. I wanted to make sure I was good just in case that area was full.
