I'm planning a trip to Handies via lake city, but can't get a clear read on whether I can drive through cinnamon pass after the hike and head to Ouray.
I'd be traveling to Handies on Friday morning from the Sand Dunes. Will camp the night in my roof tent, summit on Saturday morning and then head to a hotel on Saturday afternoon. I know many say the distance is the same but I'd rather take the scenic route in my 4x4 stock Range Rover (1998).
Has anyone done this before? I feel like it'd be pretty cool to have the hike finish with some off-roading and knowing there's a hotel on the other side...
I stayed in Silverton, drove over Cinnamon Pass and car camped at Silver Creek campground. Then hiked Redcloud and Sunshine. Drove back over Cinnamon Pass to Silverton that evening. You should definitely be able to go over Cinnamon to Animas Forks from Handies. You can go on to Ouray via the Mineral Creek 4wd or go on down to Silverton and back to Ouray via 550.
