Hagerman Pass Road

Post by CCU_Jim »

Not exactly 14er related, but figured there are enough folks here who could help... I'm looking at doing some hiking around where the Fryingpan Road and Hagerman Pass road join together. I'm debating whether to drive up and over Hagerman Pass from Leadville, or looping around to Basalt and coming in from the west. I'm having a tough time gauging how rough the Hagerman Pass road actually is from start to finish. I've been up to Native Lakes TH, but I know it gets rougher after that. I'll be in a stock Jeep Liberty that I've taken up Antero (to the stream crossing), Lead King Basin, and Uncompaghre upper lot. How does it compare to those, or other 4wd 14er THs?

My memories are old, but I can't imagine you'd have any trouble in a stock Jeep. The road is much milder than Baldwin Gulch to the creek.

I often go up to the Midland trailhead, which isn't that much farther. It's easy cruising up to that point. I'm not sure if it deteriorates after that.

I did it last Fall and it’s pretty rough the higher you go. In good shape up to the gate but after that it turns to sh*t pretty quickly. I drive a stock 1st gen Tundra with a 2” lift and one size up tires. Been on all the trails/roads you list and I think it’s rougher than any of them. I hated it enough to drive all the way around through Basalt and I LIVE in BV. So, yeah. TT
