Maroon Bells back to back midnight to midnight = Overnight?

Post by V1per41 »

So my wife and I are doing the FPL next weekend with Friday being day 1. We currently have a reservation on the first shuttle up but would prefer to start earlier if possible.

I do see that there are midnight-to-midnight passes that are released 3 days ahead of each day. Would it be feasible to buy three of these on back-to-back days and use that as overnight permits?

Any other reasonable options I'm missing at this point?

My wife recently went aspen to CB then stayed a night in CB then back the next day. The back to back 24 hour passes worked well for them. Seems like it’s an option

I can't tell exactly what you are asking. If you just want to do Maroon one day and N. Maroon the next, and you have a place to stay the night between, then it is easy: just drive up the Maroon Bells Road really early, pay at the self-pay station, park and climb. Drive down when you are done. Repeat the next day. We were just there. I don't think they check license plates or anything like that, but as long as you pay at the self-pay station you are good anyway. Trust me, there are plenty of parking spots if you get there at 3am (which is what I would recommend unless you are very experienced and very fast climbers). The websites make it sound like you have to have a reservation to park, but you don't need one unless you are planning in waiting until after 6am to drive up (which again is not a good idea unless you are crazy good and fast).

Has anyone tried leaving your vehicle overnight using consecutive midnight-to-midnight passes while camping (via wilderness permit)? If so, which lot did you park in?

Yes, that's what I did a few months ago. I showed both parking pass reservations at the welcome station and was given a hangtag that included the entire two-day date range. If you arrive before the welcome station is manned, I think you'd be fine displaying both passes inside your windshield. You need to park in the well-marked overnight lot, located directly below the day use parking area.

Other reasonable options?
Yes, there are.
Why not save yourself the headache and hassle of shuttles, parking permits and paying for those, by approaching the Four Pass Loop from the west?

I recently did it this way and it worked great. Depending on where you are coming from, it may take you a little longer to drive to Crested Butte, but the approach road is mellow and there are no fees or permits to park at the East Fork TH (also called West Maroon TH). Then you can come and go anytime you like.

I assume you already have your camping permits?
