Trailhead Planning Resources

Post by Chicago Transplant »

I know a lot of people are eager to get out for Memorial Day weekend, and not all of the trailheads have recent updates. Sometimes you need to "be the beta", but there are other resources that can help with your planning if you haven't seen a post on 14ers.com yet.

For years I have been using BushDucks road conditions pages, this is an OHV community and they post status updates for the various passes on their website:
https://bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm

Several counties also post Road and Bridge Department updates on their webpages, San Juan and Ouray are particularly good with that:

https://www.ouraycountyco.gov/151/Road-Bridge

https://sanjuancounty.colorado.gov/road

A couple of highlights, Cinnamon is open from Lake County to the pass (only open to Animas Forks on the San Juan County side) and Ophir Pass is open to the top on San Juan County side.

+1 for bushducks

The various National Forest websites are hit or miss as far as road conditions info. Rio Grande does a pretty good job. I haven't had any luck trying to find info on San Isabel's site. You can always call the FS office for the district you're interested in (and encourage them to keep their website updated if they aren't already doing a good job of that).

Per CDOT Guanella Pass, Independence Pass, Cottonwood Pass (BV) and Kebler Pass are all open.
