So...anyone looking for a new pet? Maybe a dog with some 14er "experience?"

Amanda - thank you for your tireless dedication to saving this dog! Without the help of you and your husband, this pup probably didn't have very long left to survive. And a huge thanks to the rescue teams - you've all earned some angel-wings.....great story, great outcome, one very lucky dog. Can't wait to hear the follow-up stories and see the pics. Can't think of better news to start the week.....

Re: Dog Found: Mt. Bierstadt!
Thanks to all of you of you who took this dog's plight so seriously, publicized it and went after her. I volunteer for the DOW with injured wildlife transport, and it is impossible NOT to become emotionally invested in a creature's fight to survive. I don't have the skills to have helped here, but am elated that those that do got the plan together, organized, executed and got that girl out safely. More importantly, that you were with her when she most needed you. I have had some very sad outcomes after picking up an animal, but I always felt that the acts of caring and kindness I provided in those last moments were appreciated by that animal. I wish that for myself. You all did something meaningful and kind. You are the kind of people I want to know. I hope we meet sometime.
This reminds me of a favorite story of mine:
While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water. He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one."

What a beautiful dog! Looks like she's been through a lot. I am really hoping that she wasn't just abandoned because she was hurt. I'm hoping we are wrong about what really happened and there is a good explanation for all this.
And I hope the (former?) owners are safe and sound somewhere and not in need of a rescue themselves.

Re: Dog Found: Mt. Bierstadt!
A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every person who assisted in this incredible humanitarian and compassionate effort. You are ALL heroes in my book. I am so relieved that this poor animal has been rescued and appears to be heading to a much happier and appreciated life.
I had become pessimistic about the likely outcome and almost dreaded opening this thread tonight, but what wonderful news this is!
My own dog's (and loyal hiking/climbing buddy) 2nd birthday is today. He's gonna get an extra dog biscuit and hug from daddy this evening.

I am so happy this story had such a good ending! I may have missed it, but did she have to be carried? Or was she able to walk some of the way?

She's a beauty. I don't know if the owners are out looking for her and really do miss her or just ditched her when things got rough, but I think it's safe to say this dog will not lack for love no matter the case. I've been watching this from work all day long and am happy to see a happy ending for all.

I second this thread for the Hall of Fame.
This is an incredible story, and the compassion and perseverance the rescue team displayed is awe inspiring.
Thank you for the effort, this is wonderful to hear.

You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. When one can no longer see, one can at least still know. - Rene Daumal
