It’s that communications blackout on reentry again!

My bet is that he heads straight for Holy Cross today and takes it easy for plenty of rest.

I never thought I'd hear doing Holy Cross for a rest day.

So if he started at 5:15am on 8/23 and the current record is 10 days 20 hours and 26 minutes, that would mean he would need to be complete before 9/3 1:40am to beat it.
10 full days gets him to 5:15am on 9/2, plus 20 hours and 25 minutes from there. Sound right?

The mountain mentality is different here in Colorado. There's no shortage of people here that will attempt amazing feats of endurance simply because it's there to be done. There are no expectations other than to redefine what is possible in the alpineThreeT wrote:That last Blog post was an emotional read. John's body has to be screaming at him to stop this madness. I will probably never meet you or any of your support staff but I don't think I will ever forget this. But for those few days in August 2012 when everything that is right about the world and an unmatched human spirit was on display in the Colorado Rockies. Soldier on my "friend"

And 4 hours of extra sleeping. I think he has the bandwidth to sacrifice that time and still beat the record. Plus his safety in the Elks is undoubtedly his #1 priority. Why push it now when he can push it on the home stretch?

Yeah, I'm with you Tuba. HC this afternoon, Elks tomorrow, Castle tomorrow night, Sawatch 4 Saturday, Front Range on Sunday. I'm tired just typing it...its_not_a_tuba wrote:jdorje wrote:That's like 4 hours of added driving though.its_not_a_tuba wrote:My bet is that he heads straight for Holy Cross today and takes it easy for plenty of rest.

Of course, it's 1 pm and he's still at Denny Creek. I hope he left his spot at the TH and he's half-way up 24 by now. If he's still there, my fingers are crossed that he's ok.

Add Utah too. I've been lurking following Homie's progress this entire time, and upon getting a better idea of the dedication required to even attempt such a feat, I'm just blown away. This has been a very inspiring/uplifting story, and I wish him all the best tomorrow in knocking out all of those Elk bad boys in one shot!

Re: My 14er record attempt
Just to be devil's advocate, because I think there are a number of good plans (and I don't know how Homie feels), will he be able to push it on the homestretch after doing the Elks traverse? Having five peaks (Castle, Elbert, Massive, Huron, LaPlata) to do the day after the Elks seems a bit rough. Also, doing Huron and LaPlata today only adds 1,200 vert over Holy Cross with shorter drives. If they HUSTLE from Yale to Huron, he could be done with both peaks by 10:00, giving him five full hours to sleep on paved roads and in parking lots before the Elks.its_not_a_tuba wrote:jdorje wrote:That's like 4 hours of added driving though.its_not_a_tuba wrote:My bet is that he heads straight for Holy Cross today and takes it easy for plenty of rest.

Hard to say, everyone is making good points and Yale has made the path difficult anyway you slice it.
