Rockdale/Clohsey Lake Stream Crossings

Post by cvmercer »

Has anyone been through the Rockdale trailhead to Closhey Lake stream/river crossings since "djacobson's" trailhead conditions post on June 24, 2017 and if so, how are the crossings? How deep are they, can stock Rubicon cross?

I did Emerald via Rockdale yesterday. The first crossing is pretty mellow for the most part... just long. You're going to be driving in the creek for at least a few hundred feet, but it never really got deeper than ~1 feet deep. The second crossing is pretty short but the water is running pretty fast, and it's at least a foot and a half deep at the lowest point. You could keep your left tires up quite a bit higher on one side, but the other side is going to sink down considerably, and who knows what's under there.

That said, I saw a LIFTED Jeep and a big, lifted flatbed truck made it just before the gate below the lake. After walking both stream crossings barefoot, I didn't even consider taking my stock Toyota pickup (11" clearance) through.

I'm not sure you could drive that road any faster than you could hike it.

"eskermo", thank you for the response, this sounds considerably better than the information from June 24th, still not sure if we will try to cross, will decide after checking it out when we arrive on Friday.

We crossed last week in a stock(ish) Rubicon. We don't have a lift, but do have a snorkel. (The snorkel was unneeded though). Like the post before, it was about a foot deep. The first part driving down the stream was fine. Just before you exit the second section, there were a couple of holes, so be ready for those.
