4WD Road to Massive's SW Trailhead

Post by sieggy80305 »

I'm looking for a sense of how passable to road is for Massive's SW trailhead in a Nissan Pathfinder. Reading trip reports I seem to get a bit of differing opinions.

Thanks!

If you have 4WD, you'll be fine. It's not that bad

Thought I could tag onto this thread with a quick question.

I want to drive my sedan to the junction of FS110/FS110J (0.5 miles below Halfmoon Creek TH). Is that possible? I can't get a consensus on the two mile stretch between the lower Massive TH and this junction based on the recent reports. Roach's 13er book and the second edition 14er book say they can make it to the junction, and the 14er.com description says cars should park at the junction but lists the two miles to the junction as easy 4WD. From reports, it sounds that the worse obstacles are not until the final 0.5 miles to Halfmoon Creek after the junction.

I've driven rough roads in my sedan (including the lower 4WD on Sneffels by accident), but I haven't been up this road. Also, are there places to pull off and camp along the two mile stretch?

Thanks for any info!

I drove it in my 4WD Jeep Cherokee about a month ago, it has a small lift. You should be fine in your Pathfinder if you take it slow.

I personally wouldn't attempt that stretch in a sedan.

Yes, plenty.

Did it in a stock 4WD Tacoma a couple of weeks ago. No problems.

Just went up today in a F150. No problem but definitely would not attempt past the lower Massive trailhead in a sedan.

Thanks everyone for the notes! I'll see if we can't borrow an SUV to get to the junction.

Was up there on August 19th with my friend... she was in an '09 Subaru Outback and I was in my '17 Subaru Forester... no problems making it up with some careful driving in one or two spots. The trailhead was a variety of Subarus, rental SUVs, and trucks. I noticed some Imprezas and other sedans parked lower down. I think it comes down to driver comfort.
