Has anyone been up the 4WD portion of the road headed to Huron Peak TH recently? I am going with my son on Saturday, and having never been, I was wondering if an Outback will make it up the 4WD section.
Thanks for the help!

Check the 8/13 conditions report for Huron and the comment section.

Outbacks have and could make it. Not advisable though. You'll likely have some hits underneath and drag here and there, especially if you're not careful. Even a basic higher sitting 4x4 can take some hits if you're not careful.

I've walked from the 2WD TH to the 4WD TH and back several times. It's not a bad walk, and it's a nice warm up in the morning. Then again, there have been times where people said "an Outback won't make it to X trailhead." And that's only fuel for the fire for me to try.

I was there the weekend before last. I would not have wanted to try it in my older style Outback, but I saw newer Outbacks up there. Depends on your tolerance for bumps and scrapes. I would rather walk the easy extra miles than risk an expensive car repair or tow to save a pretty small amount of time.

Consider parking at the 2wd trailhead and start walking toward the 4wd trailhead with your thumb out. I've seen outbacks at the 4wd trailhead but I wouldn't do it.Moffattrobert wrote:Has anyone been up the 4WD portion of the road headed to Huron Peak TH recently? Taking the Lulu Gulch trail is an option too. If you have to leave your car at the 2WD TH and walk, might was well walk that way. No people and only one kinda sucky part, between the last switchback on the road and the top of the ridge (assuming you don't follow all the switchbacks up to Middle Mtn).
You have solitude, much of it above treeline, and you don't hook up to the main trail until the very end. Was up there last week and the main trail looked like Greys/Torreys - only about 1000 people on it.
You could even follow the standard trail back down and out if you wanted.

Came in on Monday 8/14 from 390/Winfield, there was a newer Highlander and a Mazda CX5 at the 4WD trailhead so it can be done in lower slung cars, the first 1/2 mile after Winfield is probably the worst of it.

Sorry to piggyback here, but I'm trying to hike Lake Ann this w/e from the Huron 4x4 TH and wonder what the road is like to the 2wD TH. I drive an AWD sedan, but 11+ miles is a long way to go if the road is gnarly. I was on the road to park at the Mt. Massive 2wD TH the other day and it was slow going, so am curious. Thanks all!

It's the same type of crappy washboard road to the 2wd TH. First four miles have been graded and dust abated, but after that... bumpy, but any 2wd can make it.DoriMer wrote:Sorry to piggyback here, but I'm trying to hike Lake Ann this w/e from the Huron 4x4 TH and wonder what the road is like to the 2wD TH. Thanks JQDivide for the quick reply. I drive a Subaru, but it's a low-clearance sedan. New tires though, so I should be fine (fingers crossed).JQDivide wrote:It's the same type of crappy washboard road to the 2wd TH.
