Fording the Rio Grande @ Ute TH

Post by dillonsarnelli »

Anyone have any pictures of the crossing or insight as what to expect this time of year?

Thanks!

I was just looking at this and wondering myself.

Are you referring to the TH for Ute Ridge near Beartown? If so, I had no trouble driving across the Rio Grande in a stock 4Runner a couple of weeks ago on my way to Beartown.

Otina, ha, what's the occasion?

Eddie, I actually meant over to the east by the reservoir (on foot). Thanks though!

Fished that area in July last year, lots of places to cross less than knee deep. Probably even easier this late. The suckers running up from the Reservoir were amazing -- you could "herd" 100s of them into blocked runs and just about walk across on their backs.

We did it Labor Day weekend 2015 and found that it was really freaking cold but otherwise manageable. Don't think anyone took pictures, it was probably knee deep but I am not 100% on that. We packed-in in the morning after a rainy night. Its like a 30 second walk from the car, so its easy to scope it out the night before.

The occasion? Been trying to plan out more of my peaks down there last few days. But I guess I was more wanting to know about what Eddie mentioned, as Ute Ridge is a bit far from Ute TH.

Agree with the comments about knee deep - will be a quick crossing - we always bring an inexpensive pair of beach slippers for the crossing and then stash them in the willows above the river and pick them up on way out. Great area - you will have a wonderful time.

Kyle, Mike, Ron,

Thanks for the info! Cold, knee high, goes quick, bring a pair of beater shoes, and eat more fish. Got it. If I fall in, I'll start an analysis thread. Thanks again.

Otina, after using your TR to rip around Wetterhorn Basin, I'd have to say "far" is a relative term.

Indeed. Make sure you dwell on all the possibilities of how you might have screwed up. Why wait? Start the speculation right away.

Don't forget to unbuckle the hip/chest belt(s) on your pack before crossing El Rio. (A lesson learned from Pilgrim)

I did say "a bit far" All the trips I want to do right now are 'a bit far' with monsoon season still roaring. Can't wait till we have ALL day to play. Lots of 15-22 milers ready to happen \:D/
