I'm considering getting a small house/condo in the mountains and would like to get suggestions for location. The main use would be to escape the heat during the summer, drive less for non Front Range hikes, maybe be closer to ski areas, maybe to airbnb it out a few times a year. I have obligations in Denver as well, so would like it to be 2 hours drive away tops. And obviously cost is a consideration as well; most of the places I've seen on Zillow are more expensive than where I live now...
ps: I remember seeing a similar topic recently but wasn't able to find it, so sorry for the possible dupe, and would appreciate anyone pointing me to the other discussion

You mean buy? Time to do that here was around 2012. Stuff has doubled since then. Wait for the next recession; they always come eventually.
Cost varies in direct relation to distance from the nearest ski resort. Actually it's more like a square or cube relationship. Try some place like Kremmling.

I'd like to buy; maybe land and have something built on it. Land is relatively cheap, so I wouldn't lose too much on it even if I perfectly mistimed the market.TravelingMatt wrote:You mean buy? Pine/Buff Creek/Deckers? LCW, fishing, mtb but no ski
I'd say Frisco/WP/Granby but I've been watching there and the prices are very high now.

RE Pine/Buff Creek/Deckers- you don't really get out of the heat too much there. Not a huge temp drop vs Denver.

I'd be looking to Fairplay or Alma - good place for an airbnb too. Buena Vista as well, but it's a tad pricey, and basically Boulder in style at this point.

Here's some things to consider when buying a cabin in the mountains. I've been a broker for over 33 years and am in the middle of a transaction in the Fairplay area right now.
If you are paying all cash, no problem. Financing is a huge issue if the property is off grid, or has no heat source, comparable sales to support the value, access and many other issues. Talk to a local broker in the area wherever that may be and talk to a lender they may recommend. Good luck

There are a bunch of lots in the Granby Ranch area starting at 13K, Condos around 200K, and suites available at Silver Creek for under 100K. Ski right out your back door, 20 mins to Winter Park, and 25 mins to RMNP and 90 mins to Denver.

Ok, this is 3 hours from Denver, not 2. It isn't near a ski area, but adjacent to a now closed one. It is an active rental property, sits at around 9000', and is a great, cooler climate getaway with lots of hiking/fishing available nearby. Don't know what your price points are, but this one is fully furnished and in great shape. We have a home 2 doors down from it, and love the area.
