Well, yeah. But it's still fun to whine about, right? I would gladly read a 20-page thread of I-70 war stories. Misery loves company.

It doesn't take too many gapers to totally destroy traffic. We got 2" of snow this morning. A wreck totally screwed I-25 (what else is new?). 2 gapers ruined the best alternative. Missouri plates (of course) going 20mph on a perfectly straight road and a stalled truck at the busiest intersection.

285 ftw.

Unless you happen to enjoy 30 mph uphill truck races.

Well, friend, pretty sure that at your age, 28, you could climb 10-15 13ers a year and finish by the time you're 60. I'm betting you could climb this number of 13ers in the spring and fall when traffic on US 285 isn't quite as bad. To climb the 13ers you don't need to go totally OCD on it. A lifetime approach works just as well. And it gives you something to continually look forward to.

Now, if you stopped because you got bored with it, that's a different story.

This forum has lost a few members due to climbing accidents. I'm not aware of but one member dying in an automobile accident on the way to a trailhead.

I hear Idaho is super cool. We should all move there.

BOISE BABY!!!! The next Denver. I think we'd all be wise to move there.

Maybe even Amazon HQ2 will throw a massive curve ball and set up shop there.

I guess if you don't know about it; it didn't happen. GtK
Of all the 13er finishers, one died on a mountain, and three others had serious accidents that perhaps could have been much worse, and the spouse of one of the finishers was struck by lightning. Those are some incidents of about the 30 finishers that I know about. If I compare that to the driving mishaps of all the people I know, which is far greater than 30, I know of one person who died in a automobile accident and there have been numerous car accidents. But the hours on the road dwarfs the hours on the mountains. If people climbed about as much as they drive, you'd see far more deaths and injuries.

That's part of my rationale for rejecting that statement. If you wish to disagree, so be it. But underestimating the risks involved in mountaineering leads to complacency that can be bad. Real bad. People are better off understanding it's a false statement, at least for Class 3 and Class 4 climbs where the risks can be quite real and nothing to mess with. I've been at this for decades, and I've met far more people who have died in the mountains than have died on the road. Your mileage may vary.
