Lower Huerfano TH Private Property?

Post by Bombay2Boulder »

I was in the region last weekend and noticed that now there is a no parking sign exactly below where the landslide happened. This was not there for the last two years I was there. So I guess the lower TH mentioned on the site is on private property now? We had a subaru so we could go all the way to the upper TH, this is different from the intersection of Zapata Trail which is found around 0.2 miles from the landslide. Not really sure if this is actually private property or some misunderstanding? I don't think vehicles without some clearance will be able to go beyond this point and was a good parking option for them. Wondering if anyone as any info on this? I checked nat geo map but couldn't really find much.

The Ranch has always been there since I've been hiking it. I can remember back to 2004 and it was there then. I've never had any problems with them, and they have waved on my way by. But I have never parked on their turf either.

The actual TH, which serves anything up there and even Lily Lake by another route, is on Federal Land and I have never had any issue there whatsoever. Others have, when some drunk assholes were causing a ruckus and blasting caps, but that's another issue that got solved. They had nothing to do with the property owners.

I think I've used that TH 8 or 10 times and never had a problem but I have not been there since the slide.

Maybe I was lucky, but I parked about 100 yards away from that sign yesterday and had no problems. I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're just leaving a car there.

The area circled in blue is that private public transition where the landslide is. I'm sure, especially with the level of busyness 14er TH's can attain, they just want people to be aware there is private property right there.

Like Bills directions say "Rough 2WD access to the west side of the landslide area, 2 miles from the trailhead". Which I imagine he's referring to that perfectly straight north-south portion of the road, on the west side which is all national forest, and just down the road is private. Once your past it and/or on the west side you should be fine, and if there are signs saying private they're likely incorrect and you're legally in the clear.

General rule of thumb I'd say is to just get past or on the west side of the slide. Has a nice ring to it. Wow, lame. Ok.
