Hi all. So last year I came to this board seeking advice on doing my first 14er (Bierstadt). I had such a good time that I decided to book a week in Breckenridge this coming August and give Quandary a try. One of the things I found infinitely beneficial was to do a shorter "practice" hike the day before just to give my Midwestern lungs and legs a bit of a warmup. I did Chief Mountain which as I recall is about 1000' of gain and a 3 mile round trip. I assume there are comparable hikes around Breckenridge but I was wondering if anyone had any particularly scenic or fun ones they could recommend.
Also - if any southeastern Wisconsin hikers are reading this and looking for decent trails for training, I have found the Bald Bluff section of the Ice Age Trail near Palmyra to be the best in the area with regard to hills and steepness. Although the cloud of orbiting mosquitoes I encountered last weekend was downright obnoxious.

Two mountain passes near Breckenridge give you car access, intermediate altitude conditioning and nice views. One is Loveland Pass about 20 miles away and 12,000 feet. The hike has similar views of a 14er. The other is Hoosier Pass 11 miles away and 11,500 feet. I like Loveland Pass better.

Wheeler Trail might meet your needs. It will give you some elevation gain, but nothing too extreme. There is an access point just south of Breckenridge. See https://kiosks.rootsrated.com/gobreck/w ... il-hiking/ . Look for Access #2 for directions.

When you gonna be in Breck? Sniktau at Loveland Pass is the perfect warmup for peakbagging. So is Shrine Pass at the top of Vail Pass. Both offer some fun scenery as well.
If you're in the area, I'd also try to knock off Mt Sherman. The DeCaLiBro is another popular choice but the Shermanator is a pretty slick and quick 14er.
