Has anyone ever done this? I drive a 2wd vehicle and usually have much longer approaches (on rough road) so I bring my mountain bike and bike the approaches, some peaks even allow you to bike up some of the trail before stashing in the woods. Makes the decent back at the end of the day pretty fast and fun for some.
So I'm wondering if anyone who's gone up to South Colony Lakes knows if it's worth it. And if so how far back I could get my bike before the trail prohibits or I hit a wilderness boundary?

An old road goes to the wilderness boundary. I'm sure it's mountain bike friendly.

Pretty strenuous on the way up, but full of, "Wheeee!" on the way down. I think a fair amount of people do this, if you read the TRs on this site. Trail after the final parking lot clearly states bikes are allowed on the trail, until the Wilderness boundary is met, near the old minesite. You can go all the way up there, or leave the bike at the info signs, where the road narrows quite a bit.

Yep, this is possible on so many 14ers that have rough/4wd road approaches that aren't in wilderness. I think it is a great option for people who don't want to risk doing damage to their primary transportation vehicle. South Colony is pretty rough in places on the upper portion, but like Justin said there is still plenty of "Wheee!"
