And slope steepness.

The wind gust that cartwheeled me down the scree slope on Twin Sisters was estimated around 100 mph based on some review of data that day by a meteorologists using data from nearby weather stations, etc. The wind was gusting between 20-40 (my estimate) throughout that morning but nothing that my partner and I felt was unsafe until we broke through tree line. Once there it felt like it doubled and we were having trouble maintaining our balance so after only 100 yards, we turned back when the gust hit me.

I agree that we tend to exaggerate wind speeds, wind chill, angles, etc so it's kind of a personal decision, imho, as to what wind speed makes you uncomfortable. I guess if you are thinking about it, you might be near your limit. My lesson from my event was to be very mindful of gusts, in addition to sustained winds. All it takes is one ... :-"

I used to carry a wind gauge on my hikes. I was surprised how often I overestimated wind speed - something that felt like 60 mph was often only 30 - 40. It gave me a new respect for high gust weather forecasts.

The one time I got clean blown off my feet I had recorded gusts of 82 mph before the incident. This was a January hike on Mount Audubon, just before the saddle on the standard hiking route. It was actually pretty neat to get picked up and thrown since I landed in soft snow and didn't get hurt. As far as mountain lessons go, I got off easy (especially compared to Alan!)

It takes about 70mph to knock an average human off their feet. So there's that.

Personally, when I see anything higher than 30mph, I don't even bother. Wind is the most annoying to me, and even though I know unless it gets to 70mph, it won't knock me over, there's nothing like being on an exposed area and having a strong gust come through--freezes me in my tracks.

Democrat on October 8th, 2017

This was enough wind to make us abandon doing the rest of the Decalibron loop that day. Fought just to get Democrat and then decided to call it a day. I'll also add the winds were stronger down on the saddle than during this calm period

My personal experience is we are all on a transition from

1] Getting to the summit in tough conditions is what makes me tough. The thrill of accomplishment to persevere through difficult circumstances. A measuring stick.

to

2] I am doing this for my enjoyment and strong wind removes most of that enjoyment so I'll stay below treeline or wait for a better weather window.

A few bad winter experiences with wind was enough for me to fully make that transition.
