Lion attacks of humans average 1/2 per year in Colorado. I wouldnt be surprised if car breakins are at least a hundred times more common.Tejonmax wrote:Remind me again, How many people have actually had their cars stolen from a trailhead? At trailheads? A break-in is far different than a car theft. Nothing mentioned on this thread will prevent a break-in as long as there are rocks at the trailhead unless you sit at the trailhead all day watching your car. Of course that kind of defeats the purpose or going to a trailhead.peter303 wrote:Lion attacks of humans average 1/2 per year in Colorado. My car window has been smashed before, but I haven't had a car that got stolen. But if all I need to do is to pull a fuse to make it even more unlikely, guess what? I will pull that fuse.

I guess if you are going hiking in Denver that could be a problem. Car theft is a big problem. We were talking about at trailheads weren't we? How many were stolen at trailheads?justiner wrote:Perhaps a little more than 50. According to this,peter303 wrote: Lion attacks of humans average 1/2 per year in Colorado. Re: Como lake road car stolen Blanca peak
Are you going to take the fuse out when you park in Denver or when you go in to pay for your gas or pick up your takeout pizza? That is when your car is much more likely to get stolen. My point is just this is a lot of worry about a very very very small problem. A lot of the suggestions were also very amusing and I enjoyed reading them but let's be honest. Car theft at trailheads in the mountains is not really much to lose sleep over. I do take my key with me. Don't leave the car unlocked with the key in it but I am much more worried about losing my key than my car being stolen. If I were a car thief I don't think I would drive or walk to the trailhead to Lake Como to steal a car. I would just go to the mall in Denver or any other town. Seems like the options would be much greater there. You could probably even find a car that doesn't have the fender missing. But, I'm not a car thief so maybe I just don't understand the best place to steal a car.polar wrote:My car window has been smashed before, but I haven't had a car that got stolen. This may help:

Like insurance, the main benefit of a system like this is peace of mind. But if it happens one day, it sure would be nice if the police could track your car in real time.

I never park my car without The Club. I mean, why ask for trouble?

Re: Como lake road car stolen Blanca peak
Since you asked, I actually do plan to do this more often now that I know how easy it is to do. I got your point the first time. But it takes me less time to pull a fuse under my steering wheel than the time it took you to type up that post, so I'm going to do it regardless of how many points you make. I have never lost a car key in my life, but that doesn't mean I won't take the extra 10 seconds at the beginning of every trip to clip my car keys to the little key clip that's in every pack I own. And doing so also doesn't mean I'm losing sleep over my car keys, it just becomes a habit. Not every trailhead is far up in the mountains. I climb a lot in Clear Creek that's just minutes outside of Golden, and I know there have been quite a few break-ins recently. No car was stolen as far as I know, but taking a few extra minutes to make my car harder to steal just seems like a no-brainer to me. Feel free to write more on why I shouldn't do it though.Tejonmax wrote: Are you going to take the fuse out when you park in Denver or when you go in to pay for your gas or pick up your takeout pizza? Yes Sir! 30+ years no trouble....or follow the Polar way and over think it until you never make it out of your driveway.dpage wrote:I never park my car without The Club. I mean, why ask for trouble?

Thieves look for low hanging fruit...the easy ones. Houses, cars, motorcycles, phones, wallets, purses.....
If something can be done to increase the "pain in the ass" factor, I believe that's in my favor. I don't want anything of mine stolen, whether it's a jacket in the back seat or my truck.
Lots of good ideas presented here. For those that say yes/no..you do you, I'll do me.
In lots of ways this discussion echos the risk/danger debates of how dangerous it is to hike 14ers. The drive is riskier....but the numbers show...the % is higher....miles driven per death....and so on. Live your damn life. We don't beat death by living long. We beat it by living well. Not my words....the words of Dr Randy Pausch.
